Pad 4 Inspection - Splitting up a Queen Castle | June 5, 2022
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.2 года назад
Checking in on a queen castle settled in a 6-Frame poly hive. The colonies inisde were given grafted queens. The results ultimately were not that successful, but none the less, this was dividing the colonies into two boxes for expansion. One has a replacement queen, the other requires mitigation as it seems the queen is a drone-layer. Such is the outcome of grafting sometimes. Watch as I split ...

One thing I really want to stress, is we NEED honey bees. Every year, I put out several Watering stations for birds, chip monks, etc. When I find bees on them,I literally find out which way they are coming from, and get a couple of cleaned Zaxby's plastic plates, fill them to the top with water, and put them close to the bees. They are on it,and quick. I then get another bowl, and pour it half full with the hummingbird Liquid, and put water in the rest, to the top. For some reason, Honey bees LOVE that stuff. I keep adding Ice to it throughout the day. If I wasn't doing this, I'd hate to see what they'd do.

You took the right decision 💯 % no doubt. Just the thought of screaming kids and pets getting attacked 😢. those are just evil incarnate, that level of aggression is just rarely seen, some might argue you get more honey but at what cost? I went to rescue a hive today that has not been touched for about 10 years, so who knows how many times it swarmed and they were as gentle as my other bees and am hobbyist new to be keeping, statistically they should have been very aggressive but they weren't. So am not sure what caused that particular hive to be this aggressive.

Super thankful to have stumbled upon this video. I’m a new beekeeper and having an understanding behind what an aggressive hive can act/look like and how to manage it is valuable information that’s not often discussed. I know your decision to take this hive out was not made lightly. Sorry it had to come to that. But again, very thankful you walked us through the process ❤

There wasn't any farmers who wanted them? Sounds like your area is too suburban and not rural enough for this colony. Painful to imagine and definitely not an easy case to deal with, but thankfully the neighbourhood is a little safer for children and pets.

Thank you for making this video. I know how difficult it was because I currently have a very hot hive :( I removed a swarm a few months ago (my first one!) and was so excited! They were aggressive when I removed them and being naïve I was hoping it was because it was still chilly and they had been living wild for over 20 years. This swarm was about 7 pounds of bees! Anyways, I got them set up in two 10 frame deeps and within two weeks they were trying to swarm again! I did a walk-away split and was successful. The split is not the gentlest but definitely not as aggressive as the original. I will keep an eye on them. My husband checked the original yesterday and I warned him that they were very aggressive before he opened the hive. He didn't believe me...sigh. He got stung over ten times in less than 20 seconds and left running for his life. He was not suited up as he usually doesn't when checking our bees. Our other hives are very gentle and we don't even smoke them. Blessedly, I was fully suited when they tried to accost me about two weeks prior to this attack....It was MUCH worse. I had actually pulled frames and that's when all hell broke loose. I calmly replaced the frames, put the hive back together and slowly walked away with sadness because I knew then what I would have to do. I will end this with the reason they were wild. It was an elderly man who kept bees and had a swarm from his hives that stayed in the area and started living wild. Twenty years later, he had long since passed away, and his grandson asked me to remove the swarm that I got. They had been living in an old house for a very long time. This generation after many many generations of bees living wild for so long and having zero human interaction quickly decided that humans are monsters and must be eliminated. And so I will be dispatching this hive after dark. I will keep a very close eye on the split and will most likely be dispatching it too. I do not want these genetics getting into our very gentle hives whatsoever.

MY DAD WAS STUNG IN HIS THROAT BY A YELLOW JACKET AND BECAME EXTREMELY ALLERGIC.SORRY NOT YELLING I lived outside of Tucson in the mid 2000 and went out one morning to walk the dog and a "cloud" of bees were in the back yard away in the desert. Some co workers couldn't get out of their house as a hive decided to build a nest in their tree. I understand the honey making ability but as many other nature interruptions by man with thought to be a great idea (wild hogs, multi floral roses (Indiana) and many more) we are not smarter than nature good intentions don't always equal great results

Thank you for this valuable Information! As a person considering bee keeping as an assistance in pollinating of my large garden even though we live in a rural area, I will take this information to heart as the different personalities of the hives and how dangerous this can be. My mentor has “ above all” continued to emphasize the understanding of how each QUEEN and the hives can be quite different. I agree it looks as if this was no option for choice. Again, Thank you👨🏻‍🌾🙏🙏
